Description
YBCO superconductor modelling. Computer model of the crystal structure of the high-temperature superconductor YBCO (yttrium barium copper oxide). Its chemical formula is Y.Ba2.Cu3.O7. The atoms are colour-coded: yttrium (purple), barium (green), copper (orange) and oxygen (red). The superconducting copper oxide planes are here depicted using a two-dimensional Hubbard model. Superconductivity is a phenomenon where the structure of a material allows unimpeded flow of electrons, usually only at low temperatures. YBCO (superconducting at 93 Kelvin, minus 180 degrees Celsius), was discovered in 1987.
