Description
Quantum computing circuit design. Close-up of the circuit design and layout for IBM's five-qubit superconducting quantum computing device. In 2015 and 2016, IBM scientists made key breakthroughs in this field (including parity measurement), using latticed arrangements that can scale to larger dimensions. Parity measurement is the basis of many quantum error correction protocols. Quantum computers, which are under development, are based on quantum mechanics and the principle of representing information using quantum properties. This has the potential to massively increase computing power. A qubit is a quantum bit. IBM scientists in Zurich, Switzerland, working with colleagues at IBM's TJ Watson Lab in New York, are building their own quantum research laboratory.
