Description
The Titanic sitting in the fitting-out basin at Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Ireland. The Titanic steamship was the largest ship ever built at the time, measuring 268 meters long and weighing 67,000 tonnes. The Titanic's hull had 16 watertight compartments and many people thought that these made it unsinkable. During the voyage to America the Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912 which punctured 5 compartments. The ship sank in three hours with the loss of 1503 lives.
