Description
Caption reads, "Darwin's evolutionary theory was to reinterpret the centuries old picture of life as a tree with many branches displaying the various species. This eighteenth century pattern not only perches birds and animals amid the branches and roots but also adds complecity by slightly varying each leaf." Taken from Calico Painting and Printing in the West Indies, 1921. The word Calico is derived from the name of the Indian city Calicut to which it had a manufacturing association. Calico is a plain-woven textile made from unbleached cotton. The raw fabric was dyed and printed in bright hues and calico prints became popular in Europe.
