Description
LHC superconducting magnet. A prototype quadrupole superconducting magnet, designed for use in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. This magnet is undergoing tests at Fermilab (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory) near Chicago, USA. The LHC will accelerate protons up to energies of around 7 TeV or tera-electron volts (million million electron volts). The LHC will be built in the existing 27-km LEP accelerator tunnel at CERN, and is planned to start operations by 2005.
