Description
Entitled "The toy department" chromolithograph showing a crowd of parents and children in the toy department of a department store at Christmas, with Santa Claus surrounded by a group of parents. Puck was America's first successful humor magazine of colorful cartoons, caricatures and political satire of the issues of the day. It was published from 1871 until 1918. It was the first magazine to carry illustrated advertising and the first to successfully adopt full-color lithography printing for a weekly publication. The exchanging of gifts is one of the core aspects of the modern Christmas celebration, making it the most profitable time of year for retailers and businesses throughout the world. Sales increase dramatically as people purchase gifts, decorations, and supplies to celebrate. In the United States, it has been calculated that a quarter of all personal spending takes place during the Christmas/holiday shopping season. Illustrated by Louis M. Glackens for Puck and published by Keppler & Schwarzmann, December 17, 1913.
